FAQ
Welcome to the Feral Mama’s FAQ! I know taxes can feel confusing, overwhelming, or just plain annoying, so I’ve put together answers to the questions I get most often. My goal is to make the process simple, clear, and stress-free—no jargon, no judgment. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out anytime. I’m always happy to help.
How long does it take to get my taxes done?
The turnaround time depends on how complex your return is and how busy the season is, but most returns are completed within a few days once I have all your documents. I’ll always communicate clearly about timing so you know what to expect, and I won’t file anything until you’ve had a chance to review and approve it. If I ever need extra information from you, I’ll let you know right away so there are no surprises.
How long do I need to keep my tax records?
Most taxpayers only need to keep their records for 3 years, which is the standard IRS requirement. If you filed a claim for a loss or bad debt, keep them 7 years. Some people choose to keep records for 10 years to match how long the IRS keeps its own transcripts, but this is optional. When in doubt, keeping records a little longer is always safer.
When should I reach out to get my taxes done?
It’s always best to reach out as early as possible—especially if you have multiple income sources, dependents, or unique circumstances. Starting early gives us time to review your documents, ask questions, and make sure nothing gets rushed. Even if you don’t have everything ready yet, contacting me early helps you secure a spot and makes the whole process smoother and stress-free.
What documents do I need to provide?
The documents you need depend on your situation, but most people will need things like W-2s, 1099s, identification, and any records of deductions or credits. Once you reach out, I’ll send you a simple list tailored specifically to your return so you only gather what’s actually needed—no guessing, no extra paperwork.
How much does it cost to file my taxes?
It depends. Taxes are not one-size-fits-all — everyone’s situation is different. Your price will vary based on the forms required for your specific return, such as your income types, deductions, dependents, marital status, credits, and more.
To keep pricing fair and affordable, I don’t use flat rates or charge people for things they don’t need. Instead, I charge based on the actual forms required to complete your tax return (not just the documents you bring).
This means your pricing is fully tailored to your situation, so you only pay for the work your return truly needs — nothing more.
